There are a few remaining SAR steam locomotives still operational in South Africa of both 3'6" and 2' Gauge.
The 2' Gauge is well represented by the likes of "Sandstone Estates", "Paton's County Railway" as well as the "Apple Express".
3'6" Gauge SAR Steam is represented by "Friends of the Rail", "Reefsteamers" and "Umgeni Steam Railway" to name a few.
It is difficult to operate full size SAR Steam due to operational costs, logistics as well as Rail and Preservation politics.
At the same time there are not many facilities for servicing full size steam anymore.
Since it is not practical to have a large fleet of operating 3'6" SAR locomotives, SARSPA seeks to play an important role in SAR
Steam Preservation through SAR Live Steam which provides an alternative and equally viable means of SAR Steam Preservation.
It is highly unlikely that full size steam should cease to operate in the future but IF full size SAR Steam was not allowed to run
anymore in the coming years and the difficulty of running/maintenance of 3'6" SAR Steam became too costly or unviable, it is hoped
that SARSPA would at least have a fair number of working examples of various SAR Steam Classes (in the form of Live Steam)
through its own locomotives and through its members locomotives which would preserve the full size (both 3'6" and 2') through
sight/sound/smell/detail."
Together will our friends operating full size steam, we hope to take South African Steam Preservation from strength to strength and
into the future.
Join us in the future so that we may travel back into the past....

Closer to the real thing - Pacific 10th Class in 7 1/4" gauge built by "Blaar" Coetzee and
driven by Andries Keyser, stretches her legs on a level straight. Photo by Paul Ash.
Closer to the real thing - This magnificent 5" gauge Class 15F owned by Bobby Visagie shows incredible detail and realism. SARSPA
considers this locomotive to be a miniature working locomotive as apposed to a model. It is admirable - and in keeping with SARSPA
practice - that detailed locomotives such as this be driven like their full-size brothers without any "reservations". Photo by Justin Shawe.
